Various cells can be stimulated to divide if subject to fluid shear stress. This is particularly interesting in the case of endothelial and vascular smooth muscle cells and efforts have been made to identify the response element that activates gene expression in response to shear. There are suggestions, however, that the signalling is through the ras pathway.
